  • What are the requirements to become a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Black Hills Works?

    To be eligible for a DSP position, you must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • I just submitted my application – what happens next?

    Once you submit your online application, you’ll receive a confirmation email. A member of our Human Resources team will then contact you by phone or email to discuss your application and explain the next steps.

  • How will I know that my application was received?

    You will receive an automatic confirmation email once your application has been successfully submitted and entered into our review system.

  • What is the interview process like for a DSP role?

    The interview process typically includes two stages. First, you’ll have an initial interview with a member of our hiring team. If selected to move forward, you’ll participate in a second interview at the location where you may work. This visit allows you to learn more about the position and gives individuals supported by Black Hills Works an opportunity to meet you, ask questions, and help determine if it’s a good fit.

  • Is training provided for new DSPs?

    Yes. Black Hills Works offers comprehensive on-the-job training to ensure you feel confident in your role. In addition, we provide access to specialized training sessions and workshops led by internal staff and outside experts to support your professional development.

  • Do I need any prior experience to become a DSP?

    No prior experience is required! We welcome individuals from all backgrounds. What’s most important is that you are compassionate, dependable, and eager to support others. We provide all the necessary training to help you succeed in the role.

  • What does a DSP do on a daily basis?

    DSPs assist individuals with disabilities in living meaningful, independent lives. This can include helping with daily living activities, transportation, community involvement, job coaching, and building social and life skills—depending on the individual’s needs. Within the DSP position posting you will be able to view a realistic job preview video that provides more information on what this position entails.

  • Are benefits available to DSPs?

    Yes. Full-time DSPs working 30 hours or more are eligible for benefits that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off (PTO), retirement plan options with up to a 5% match (if over the age of 21), and more. Details about benefits will be shared during orientation or earlier upon request.

  • Are 12-hour shifts available for DSPs at Black Hills Works?

    Yes. Some of our Direct Support Professional roles offer 12-hour shifts, depending on the needs of the individuals supported and the specific location or program.

  • What are the typical hours for a 12-hour shift?

    Day shifts usually run 12 hours between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, while overnight shifts typically fall 12 hours between 8:00 PM and 9:00 AM. Exact shift times may vary slightly depending on the location and program needs.

  • How many days a week would I work on a 12-hour schedule?

    Most DSPs on 12-hour shifts work three set days each week. Common schedules include:

    • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
    • Thursday, Friday, Saturday

    Some schedules are non-consecutive, such as:

    • Sunday, Monday, Wednesday
    • Wednesday, Friday, Saturday

    We also offer weekday-only schedules in certain positions, such as Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

  • Is there different pay for working on weekends?

    Yes. DSPs who work 12-hour shifts receive premium pay (time and a half) for any hours worked on Saturday or Sunday. This weekend pay increases your overall average hourly rate when weekend shifts are part of your schedule.
