Building Independence, One Goal at a Time: Alex’s Story

Success looks different for every one of the nearly 600 participants receiving services at Black Hills Works. For some, it’s learning a new skill. For others, it’s gaining confidence, managing finances, maintaining employment or becoming more independent in everyday life.

For Alex, the support he receives has helped him build important life skills and achieve greater independence.

“Black Hills Works helps me budget,” he says. “They help me with cooking, budgeting, going over my bank account, and shopping. I love shopping!”

Managing finances and maintaining a household are important skills that help people live more independently and confidently. Through personalized support, Alex has been able to strengthen these skills while continuing to work toward his goals.

Black Hills Works staff partners with participants to individualize support, provide guidance, encouragement, and practical tools. Whether it’s creating a budget, learning meal preparation, understanding banking and finances, or developing other independent living skills, the focus is always on helping people reach their fullest potential.

For Alex, the impact goes beyond learning new skills.

“They help people a lot,” he says. “People, they’re great. They’re great people!”

Those simple words reflect something that is at the heart of the Black Hills Works mission: building meaningful relationships and providing support that empowers people to live the lives they choose.
