Leadership Development

Leadership Development at Black Hills Works in Rapid City, South Dakota

Black Hills Works has developed a comprehensive approach to leadership development that recognizes leadership happens at every level of the organization. Rather than viewing leadership as solely a management function, we’ve embedded leadership principles throughout our culture, from frontline Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to supervisors and senior management. This holistic approach to cultivating leaders reflects our commitment to empowering both the people we serve and the people who serve.

The Foundation: The 5 C’s of Leadership

At the heart of Black Hills Works’ leadership development philosophy are the 5 C’s of Leadership: Connect, Clarify, Collaborate, Coach, and Celebrate. These principles serve as practical tools that guide supervisors and leaders throughout the organization in their daily interactions with staff and participants. Rather than abstract concepts, these principles provide actionable frameworks that leaders can apply in real situations, creating consistency in how leadership is practiced across Black Hills Works.

Developing Leaders from Within: The Mentorship Model

A cornerstone of our leadership development is mentorship. This approach accomplishes multiple objectives: it develops leadership skills in experienced DSPs, provides new employees with accessible peer guidance, and creates pathways for career advancement within the organization.

Mentorship recognizes that leadership doesn’t require a formal title. By empowering DSPs to guide others, their expertise is validated and confidence builds as their develop as leaders in their own right. This peer-to-peer leadership development creates a culture where leadership is distributed throughout Black Hills Works rather than concentrated at the top.

Leadership Through Cultural Values

Black Hills Works approaches leadership development through the lens of our core values. These core values shape how leadership is practiced and developed throughout the organization. Leaders are expected to model these values in their daily work, connecting new employees to the “why” of our mission and helping them understand the importance and impact of their positions.

This values-based approach to leadership means that development focuses not just on management skills but on the deeper purpose behind the work. Leaders are developed to understand that their primary role is to support both participants and staff in achieving meaningful lives characterized by dignity and purpose.
